March 2022: Library Building Update

Gillian’s Building Update

March 2022

The new library is going up right before our very eyes and Gillian Zinser is on the ground, bringing us the latest building updates each month. Gillian is the Project Manager at Turner Construction. She’s responsible for managing the building of the NEW New Canaan Library. The construction team has made A LOT of progress since her last update. Here’s what she shared:

Masonry shafts are constructed for the elevator and north stair. This is also integral for the steel installation.

How is the project going?

Gillian: The project is proceeding very well! During the past month, we have erected half of the steel for the project. We are continuing to install decking and detailing the steel in this half while we complete the remainder of foundations for the second half of steel. The crane will return late March/early April for this operation.

Have there been any surprises on the job site?

Gillian: Currently we have not encountered too many surprises on the project (don’t want to jinx it)!

What types of equipment are on the site right now?

Gillian: Currently on site we continue to see excavators & dump trucks for the site work, forklifts for the mason and concrete contractors, concrete trucks when pouring. And, we had a 70 ton truck crane erecting the steel, which will return later for the second half of erection.

Who is on the site right now?

Gillian: Right now on site we have the site work contractor finishing up the excavation, the concrete subcontractor wrapping up foundations, the steel contractor erecting and detailing, masons installing the walls for the elevators and stairs, and the waterproofers installing protective membranes and coatings on the foundations.

What are the biggest highlights from the past month?

Gillian: Getting half of the building steel erected is a huge step forward, and finishing up our concrete foundations are this month’s biggest highlights. Next month we look forward to completing our steel erection and shifting our concrete focus to both slab on grade and getting our decks poured to create the new floors for the library! We will also see the start of our exterior wall next month so April will be very exciting! Check out the photos from this past month…

Staying Dry

Waterstop installed in the basement footings acts as a second barrier to prevent water intrusion through the foundations and into the building. This is secondary to the blueskin waterproofing and preseal on all basement footings. This picture also shows the conduit sleeves under the foundation for the entrance of the main electrical service into the building.

Water Quality

The water quality unit is installed below grade on the north side of new building.

Solid Foundation

Foundations continue to be poured along Maple Street, in preparation for the steel installation.

Strength of Steel

Steel decking is installed on the mezzanine and upper levels of the new building. Shear studs are shot into the deck to provide structural connections between the steel members and the concrete slabs.

Electrified!

Electrical conduits are roughed under the slab to provide pathways for the panelboards to the switchgear located in the main electrical room.

The Essentials

Drain piping is installed under slab for the ground level restrooms.

Getting Our Footings

Work continues on the stepped footings foundation walls which connect the structural foundation of the ground level to the basement foundations.
