Stories Behind The Chair Project
We are so touched by the outpouring of support from everyone who has dedicated a chair in the NEW New Canaan Library’s Jim & Dede Bartlett Auditorium as part of The Chair Project. There are so many amazing stories behind the chairs — we just had to share some of them with you!
Meet the Hutter Family
The Hutter Family story is one of multigenerational connections to books, libraries, and a shared love of language!
1. Francis Hutter came to New York from Berlin in 1914 and introduced a new type of printing press to this country.
2. Francis’ daughter, Catherine, was both a novelist and translator and the first family member with a book that’s shelved at the New Canaan Library.
3. Catherine’s son, Donald, was a book editor and a short story writer who won several awards for his contributions to the literary world. He’s the second family member with books that can be checked out at the Library!
4. Donald married Martha who was a librarian at Eagle Hill School.
5. Their daughter Stephanie was a children’s book editor. You can find books written or edited by members of the Hutter Family at the New Canaan Library!
Meet Andrea Carson
Andrea Carson is a photographer, mom of two little girls, and a NEW New Canaan resident! Andrea was so excited to lend her incredible talents and capture the images of 9 New Canaan residents who embody the world-class programming envisioned for the NEW New Canaan Library’s state-of-the-art auditorium.
Meet the NCHS Class of 1979
The NCHS Class of 1979 had over 20 classmates come together in less than 48 hours to inscribe a chair for the class! They thought of it as a “big group hug” to the town and Library that has collectively inspired them!
Meet the Garden Club
The New Canaan Garden Club is proud to have a chair inscribed in the new Jim and Dede Bartlett Auditorium dedicated to their members!
The connections between the NCGC and New Canaan Library are strong. The NCGC and Library have been longstanding and close partners—bringing learning opportunities to the community through collaborative programming on conservation, including with the local coalition for the pollinator pathway. The NCGC is especially excited about the Library Green and the Children’s Garden which help advance their mission of promoting conservation and encouraging civic planning and beautification in our amazing town!
